Healthy Kitchen Cooking Class presents The Scence of Taste
During this 45-minute interactive class, you will perform three experiments designed to teach you more about taste, smell and flavor and how they work together in your mouth, nose and brain.
Participants will sample 5 nameless and colored liquids. Each liquid represents one of the flavors of taste: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and umami (savory). Using their taste senses, guests must guess the flavor.
When baking soda and lemon juice are mixed together, they release carbon dioxide in a chemical reaction. Once the fizz dies down, guests will add water and sugar to make lemonade.
While smelling vanilla extract, guests will taste an apple. The flavor of the vanilla lessens the flavor of apple, showing guests how important the olfactory (smell) sense is in tasting.
Cost: $20 per setting (each setting can accommodate 1-4 people). Participants must have valid general admission tickets or a Discovery Cube membership. This class is recommended for ages 4 and up.
*Food allergies must be disclosed to the class chef at check-in. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
